Harrys Cafe De Wheels
No run ashore in Sydney was complete if you did'nt finish a night off at the Rockers or tts with a Pie or a Hot Dog from Harrys. Now Harrys has gone all yuppy and moved up market, I would like to remind readers that Harrys would'nt be where he would be today if it was'nt for the scores of sailors that supported him in his early years. I can remember signing a petition in the early '70s so they, the council, would'nt move him on. He was always at loggerheads with the council . He survived and what we see today is testament to the support of many of his customers (mostly sailors in those days) I dont think I ever met Harry, usually too drunk by that stage. A few cooks I knew worked at Harrys. Now I have started this thread and there will be hundreds if not thousands who will have a dit to tell on Harrys, so now's ya chance to spin that warry. One that comes readily to mind is when a few well meaning sailors removed the two wheels of the van and chocked it up, no one was taking Harrys away, it was at a time when the council wanted to move him on. And he was a an impasse with the council even the Docky Coppers turned a blind eye to this such was the feeling. The council caved in and let Harrys stay, so there yas go, be good to hear some more and if any one can tell me when Harrys started at the GI gates that would be good .

Don't forget the Venus Room ,but ya always knew you went to Harrys even if you could'nt remember you'd have a line of dried peas down the front of ya shirt from your hotdog floater

I used to get a magnificent Hot Dog from Harry's on the way back to GI. Hot English Mustard over the Weiner, then heaps of Mushy Peas and then some Redders along the top. I have'nt been able to get one like it since, just a lot of strange looks when i describe it.

Yes Thommo The Venus room Id forgotten that place .Plenty of good runs ashore in those days .Last time i was inSydney 1996 We stopped at Harrys for a hot dog and it didnt taste any bit like the ones we had when he was outside GI gates Then again i was as sober as a judge As a matter of a fact i think that was the only time i stopped at harrys sober . And Cliff, oh the things we ate .

Last time I made pea soup, (a proper pea soup that is), made sure I scored a couple of pies, redders and a nip of vinegar, to simulate the days we desperates scoffed all that crap outside Harry's. Yeah the taste buds are alright, but they seemed to go down a lot better after getting a gutful of piss?

I remember in 64 0n the Sydney we would stop and pick up heeps pie floaters for duty blokes, some would sit up in hammock and try and eat. ever tried to chase pie around in a hammock.

I can remember always waking up after a pie from harry's with blisters in my mouth. The bloody things were always so hot, and I was so pissed I could never feel the pain. Ahh the good old day's when i could eat a pie. Now, i keep having em. The doctor calls it reflux and puts it down to getting older. dumb doctor what do they know any way!

quinny- 03-12-2008

Never met a doctor that could quite understand a pussers cook and the only one that can understand a pussers cook is another pussers cook Yeah bring on that gastric reflux
