It rained loads here you'd think you were somewhere else. I priced sheep poo and cow manure the other day it is under $10 a bag at bunnings but it only comes in 20kg bags. I don't have a massive garden. I have planted in the last fortnight some capsicum and pumpkin seeds just to see how they go. I use bio. It has hardly any bad stuff in it for plants and is bio degradable. I collected some worms from the gutter the other day except they have disapperared.

Birds love worms so no guessing where they ended up .

I priced sheep poo and cow manure the other day it is under $10 a bag at bunnings but it only comes in 20kg bags. I don't have a massive garden. Depending on the quality of the soil where you are Smiddy, your garden will love you for it, once you've got a bag of each if you choose to do so, spread a few inches on the surface of your garden. I put around a 5 inch layer on top, and then get down on my hands and knees, use a little garden hand fork to break the top surface of the soil up a bit mixing the poo in. The cow and sheep manure is broken down (composted) properly so it should just be a blackish organic soil type appearance. Also sprinkling a bit of gypsum to break the clay up and ensure the carrots will go way down and not grow at right angles :?

Just adding to that a bit, the best 2 investments I've made recently would have to be firstly, a set of kneepads. The ones with the velcro straps running behind your knee. Bloody great for doing so many jobs, and without fear of just dropping all your weight down on your knees without stuffing up your back doing them low down jobs. And then there is Groundbreaker. This stuff I bought as a soluble concentrate, few caps in a 10 litre watering can does the trick for people who have clay soil and when it rains, the water just runs off. This stuff is I suppose a concentrated gypsum stuff, much like quite a few other soil wetter products around on the market. I tend to use it at less than the recommended mix fearing it may hurt the roots of established plants or trees. Once the valuable water has soaked into the ground all the way down, peastraw at the surface stops the stuff evaporating. One nice bale of pea or hay covers a huge area, and I reckon it looks great as well. Rather than bare, dry looking soil.

And Smiddy, if ya need a good shit spreader i know of a few that come readily to mind. Dont we all?, I hear ya say .

I ended up over fertilising my thyme and corriander seedlings. They were weak looking anyway. I have recently planted some chilli, capsicum and pumkin plants. I planted heaps of the seeds that I got from work. They are going really well.

I move my rose bush to a better position in the garden and same with my rose bush gave them both some compost (my compost heap is now a year old - 3 cheers) and some horse manure that I got from my greenie mate who lives out at Bluewater. I also moved my compost bin yes it is possible but there is a load of great soil and it is a bit slow to break new scraps down. I have also planted watermelon, pumpkin, rockmelon and paw paw seeds in lines near the back fence. I bought my self a shovel and this has made me able to do all this digging. Also a friend gave me some yellow passion fruit and i planted some of the seeds thay are just starting to grow and the paw paw seeds are growing. I use the greay water on these.

I also have some yellow passionfruit seeds growing. I use grey water on all my plants. Happy days....

Erica , great to hear alls well in the vegie patch . See you are using some horse poo , here's a good tip from my Granny . Get a couple of large placky buckets . Put your horse poo in and cover with water and leave for a couple of weeks. This zaps any grass seeds and horse poo is full of it , it will bubble and smell , so don't leave near the house . Then pour onto garden , instant vegie food !!! See you will be at the re-union , be great to see you there . I'm the old bugger with the grey beard 8)

Paul_Dibby- 07-14-2008

Ah shit!....I mean literally....Horse Shit! Just a warning to adding to Jaffa's good advice, be careful where you get your horse manure. Apparently some horse owners use worming drugs/tabs in the feed. This kills not only the worms in the horse, but also will be strong enough to kill worms out in the garden, spelling disaster as it is inadvertently killing the soil as well.

Jaffa- 07-14-2008

Ah , Yeah , you're right Paul . Grannie never had to worry about that . Personally , I've been using a lot of cow crap , as I'm surrounded by it . Amazing how much shit 150 cows can produce . Same thing , water it down , instant worm and plant food . This time of the year , I can stick the fork in and get enough Flat tails and Scrubbies for a good fishing session . The local Bream and trout love those scrubbies .
