Military Induction, Singapore Style My nephew is a 21 year old Singaporean Chinese lad. Yesterday was D day for him, he had to do his induction into the ARMY. As I am sure most of you are aware, two years national service is compulsory here. I got an exemption because I am too old (maybe they don't want gweilo's).
So, instead of the usual goodbye at the bus pick up point that I got, they give you a full tour of the training facility. They showed us the rifle range, obstacle courses, sleeping quarters etc. Then they took us to an auditorium and the WO there has boards made up with every item of field kit etc and went through the lot. We witnessed them taking the oath and then went over to the mess and had an ARMY scran (ARMY food is shit no matter what country you are in it appears to this author).
So whilst doing the tour, I slipped away for the odd durrie. I was watching these squads of lads marching left right and centre. They are all kitted out in black shorts, brown T's and runners!!!! The drill instructors are dressed like PTI's, no shit. There is no barking of orders like we had it "Keep up the step Penny", nobody was in step, half of them squaregating and arms flying about everywhere like bloody windmills.
Their facilities are top notch.
The fella in charge of the base told us when he addressed us that the emphasis is on personal rewards yada yada and they take a softly softly approach. I have a tendancy to agree. All the recruits looked like they were having a ball marching around the parade ground. Personally I think they do the intake over a day or two and the lads I saw maybe got there the day before. Today, when mum and dad are not around, is probably when they clamp on the screws.
In the past few weeks two lads just plain dropped dead. One in basic training and one in a unit. Big public outcry but the fact is they had dodgy tickers and it went undetected. Once they hit their limit, game over. So all hard physical activity is on hold in the military here for a couple of days until they go through their proceedures.
Told the nephew that I take it as a personal slight that he did not join pussers.
Funny story..... when I joined up there was this guy in my intake named Louie Pergaletto. Had a phobia of water. So they could not get him into the water, couple of instructors got the shits and threw him in. Well, 'ol Louie went nuts, thrashed around, and inevitably went to the bottom like a stone. They had a couple of ships divers on standby and they retrieved him, he looked like a drowned rat, Louie was as white as a sheet and had the 1000 yard stare...... spooky. So he did backward swimmers for a month but they never got him in the water. Last I heard he was transferred to the Pongos.

Like one of the many Dad's on this site with children in the ADF, I agree with you.
My daughter joined Cerberus 16Jan06 and has come across a bit of barstardisation but very little. No blanket bashings, no nuggetting the balls (the guys obviously), no taking your mattress out onto the parade ground at 5AM for an hour.
The only thing that is consistent is that to this day they still all complain about the food and a hell of a lot of them eat 50% or more of their food ashore.
Maybe I am a Jew, but I was still eating the majority of my meals in the Penguin SS Mess in Feb 04. and I complain at the drop of a hat
If Isreal, Singapore & France can do National Service for 2 years and make it work, then why can't Australia have 2 years natio?
cheers,
Lindsay

i agree with the 2 year nasho stint , would teach a lot of the younger generation respect and discipline and there is no such thing as a free lunch, i might not have been a saint when i was younger( bit of a smart arse at times) but one thing Pussers taught me was respect and discipline and you only get out of life what you are prepared to put in.. not that the world owes you a living like a lot of the young ones now. christ know what the future holds for them ... i despair for my Grand children with what is going on in this country as far as teaching common sense and life skills with children telling adults what to do. we can only hope that it will turn around one day soon. bring back national service. .. well i have said enough today must have a cup of tea and calm down the old soap box is nearly buggered.. regards Johnno

Yes johnno your sentiments echo mine and a lot of others on this site I remember watching a movie called Turkey Shoot in the Early OR mid seventies.I remember thinking then when the powers that be got all the scum out of society and locked hem in a big compound out in the middle of no where and if they escaped they tracked you down and shot you .
Yes the younger generation is going to hell in a hand basket thats for sure, too many bloody goody two shoes out there Spare the rod and spoil the child And if the parents belt the kids well all hell breaks loose .Yes a 2 year stint in the service may help but only for the ones that want to change .
Yes Lindsay a lot of sailors eat ashore these day as a lot of them live ashore especially if they are at a shore base.I'm very One sided when it comes to sailors whinging about the meal and a lot of sailors are just whingers when it comes to scran .Especially if you have run out of the popular choice.
I come from a family of five kids and only dad working Where the average breakky was toast or soggies .We had 5 choices for all meals in my house gowing up 1 You ate what was on your plate.2 hot 3 cold 4 take it and 5 leave it .It was as simple as that .
Imagine my joy when i went to my first Scran at Cerberus Corned beef and Hash cakes were on the menu and 40r 5 different types of duff all the bread you could eat and tea or coffee I Imagine my surprise when i went for breaky EGGS bacon 3or 4 side dishes to choose from I thought id died and gone to Heaven. This was to be the norm for my 20 years in pussers with the odd smörgåsbord thrown in for good luck so excuse me when i turn a deaf ear to sailors whining about scrans the majority of it is unfounded and thats why us cooks are pretty thick skinned .Weve heard it all .

Yes I agree Quinny.
I put of 13 kilograms just at Recruit School, due mainly to having 3 hot meals + afternoon tea 7 days a week. No argument from me.
On average, ask Molly, about 50% of the singles currently at sea live in Rented Accommodation ashore paid for by Pussers thru personal choice.
Speaking of being pretty thicked skinned & having heard it all it goes that way for us Scribes when we hear all the sad tales about over payments.
Rarely anybody comes to the Pay Office when they get the extra dosh in their pay but you see them fast enough when you recover it.
The other beauty that gets stuck in my neck is that Writers should be run in for making errors in Pay, ok.
Lets run in Cooks for having not enough of the "popular choice" or the meal was cold, or the meal wasn't of my choosing!! Where does it end??
So nothing has changed in the 38 years since I joined the Navy, hey??

Oh yeah, I was enjoying having good meals and plenty of them.
I like Quinny had limited meals prior to joining and I needed filling out big time.
I was at my fittest ever in June 1970. I completed a NAVY Diving Course in July 85 at age 32 & was no where near as fit then as I was in 1970.
No Trevor I am still trim taught and good to look at......lol
Trevor we served together in my time in, so you should remember first hand how I enjoyed my tucker.
