Cooks Drinking Habits Today Still being in Pussers, I love a beer as much as the next bloke. Pussers has changed with society and not as many blokes get to the pub after work as they used to. Add to this the fact that sailors don't actually live on the ship whilst in their home prot like they used to. There is a duty watch and about 10 stragglers that still live on board. The rest of the crew are either married, or have Rental Assistance (RA), paid by the puss to live ashore. A quality of life thing that some genius came up in the last 8 years or so.
Probably the biggest reason for not hitting the piss so much these days is the random breath testing on ships. On Kanimbla, the duty watch whilst out of Sydney (home port) is breath tested everyday. Blow over twice and you are on a captain's warning, blow a third time, your off to see an ADPA and your futrure is not looking too good. Sort of slows the boys down though. Saying that, I'm proud to say that my 2nd and 3rd duty cooks have no trouble turning to with a hangover a dog couldn't chew through. Reaching straight for a bacon and egg buttie and the 2ltr OJ. Well done boys.

Thanks for that Molly. Breath test for duty watch well ill be tar and feathered .Yes i suppose you have to move with the times And i suppose a lot of us still live in the past a bit Whats an ADPA molly I am tipping a lot reading your dit would have had a meeting with him .I would have been on first name basis with him Depending on what time of the day they done the breath test when i was duty most times i was well over the limit untill lunch time.

Hi Molly greet to hear what happens in this day and age ofn the Navy cooks. I thought they started to slow the drinking done in the early 80,s when I got out . Shit I would have blown the breath test to pieces as to get a good park near GI had to park the car about 6 am so off course what opens at 6am FRISCOS/// a good hour of drinking and still put up a lovely meal.

Christ on the old Anzac if they breath tested the cooks when we in port at GI any morning they would have had the ADPA (what ever that means) booked out everyday . still managed to cook 3 hot meals and duff with 2 choices of hot mains three times a day with hardly any complaints even though they called us Tucker Fxxxxers . i've turned to at 4 am had a drink of water and was pissed as lizard again after drinking cheap plonk on off pay week. the bloody bag would of exploded if we breathed into it. any way enough of old warries and bull shit for now must check and see if the missus has opened the goffas .all that i drink now . scrans off shutters down regards Johnno

In the Wardroom Galley at Watson (the then new Galley at the top of the hill), there were strategically place Bains all around the Galley with ladles sticking out of them.
The Bains were high enough so that you could'nt see inside them.
So when you were near a Bain (which was all the time), you just lifted the Ladle which was filled with White Wine.
After the first 6 or 7 ladles the plonk did'nt taste too bad. happily pissed

Good dit Molly, so what happens now if you go uptop for 4 months with your accom does pussers still pay for it? That was the fun part of living onboard was going down to Frisco's, get pie eyed with your stepping oppo's and then back onboard with not to far to go to work the next morning still shit faced. Lucky we didn't get a breath test when i was in, there wouldn't of been anyone in the galley we would of all been at AA.

Ando,
You pay a percenatge of the rent towards your house/flat, about as much as R and Q was. After 21 days away you get your contribution for this back when you return from your deployment. A nice little bonus for the singlies if they've spent the lot whilst away.
For those who weren't sure, ADPA is the alcohol and drug advisor. Sounds like you guys would have kept them on their toes for a month of Sundays.
Regards,
Molly

hi again  :?: i was just wondering if they still have the wet canteen at the tross? many a beer went over the gums in that fine establishment . and many a good dit could be told of the cooks of all ranks and their exploits. like playing football in the yard after it rained for a couple of days after closing time . and the large dog that used to come and bludge beers by standing up beside you with his paws on the bar he was taller than i was  i think he belonged to the birdy firemen. maybe some one would remember him from the old days. regards to each and everyone Johnno

I loved the Friday night raffles at the "Rockers" for the childrens hospital where the Ist prize was a quicky in the back room with Black Liza,Horse face or the Kirribilli Gorilla amongst other gems of the "old Models society"..And when they got the vidfeo juke box in early 66' with the "Girl from Ipanema" on it we thought life was as good as it would ever get... AH ! the fun days..sure is a bastard growing old and getting burnt out, but still while the memories of good time and the greatest of mates stays around so will I...
Snelly- 05-22-2008
LOL Errol. I am sitting here giggling to myself about the the first prize in the raffle and the choice you had. I still laugh out loud when I think back on my time in and some of the names people had for the regular girls at Rockers and Friscos. My 8yo daughter wants to know what i am laughing at. Should I give her your contact details to explain as I just told her they were some of your closest friends. LOL

I am shocked, I've heard about these sort of goings on, but always thought Pussers Cooks were too pure to indulge. :P
CliffWhatley- 05-22-2008
Did'nt Rockers have 'Beanies on Parade' on Saturday mornings straight after the Blue Movies?, or was this just another rumour I heard about. wtf
