I was in Tarangau with this CPOSV in 73 and one of the meals on his Menu for the Singles was brown rice, sweet & sour sauce with chicko rolls!!! No other choice. Weren't the Singles impressed....NOT!!

Doug Symes was a Chief Butcher , not an S.V. and a top bloke to know and to work for . Have a look at the Butchers thread here-abouts .

There were still 2 left by Rate when I joined in Oct '71 Lindsay. They had a Cooks Rate ......only with a B in the middle of the star instead of a C. Suggest you have a read of this thread - (about Butchers) http://maingalley.14.forumer.com/viewtopic.php?t=27

Cliff This Trevor (Cook) and Doug (Chief Butcher) Symes are in my opinion the brother & father of the CPOSV Doug Symes that I served with in Tarangau. Well I am wrong BUT Doug was a Chief and the other Butcher was a what? What I meant to say was that the Branch was closed and further new intakes into that Branch of the S&S were not allowed. Same as Motor Transport Driver (MTD), Fire Fighter (FF) that ALSO shut down as well. cheers, Lindsay

When I was at Nirimba there was a cook who was a butcher. For the life of me I cannot remember if his rate was butcher or he was a cook who was designated a butcher. The shit he could do with meat was amazing. Ever tried boning a couple of hundred quail for a dinner? This guy went through them like a dose of salt. Amazing.

My guess WOULD be that there were no Butchers by Rate in the era 79 onwards??? But watch this space. I am guessing that like many of our Cooks he may have been a butcher in civvy street prior to entering Pussers like our cliffy????
